From Artworks to Wines: The Passions of Léonard Gianadda

18/04/2023

In Martigny, it is difficult to speak of culture without mentioning Léonard Gianadda. As the founder of the foundation that bears his name, he has transformed his city into a true crossroads for art and ideas, featuring major exhibitions, outdoor sculptures and unexpected encounters.

A Life Where Everything Becomes Material for Creation

Nothing in his career follows a straight line, and that is undoubtedly what makes it so unique. Engineer, journalist, photographer, amateur archaeologist, passionate collector: Léonard Gianadda has always refused to choose a single path. He has taken them all, often simultaneously, with that constant curiosity for what is built, discovered or passed on.

A member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts under the Coupole and decorated on several occasions, including the Legion of Honour at the rank of Commander, he has above all devoted his energy to making art accessible, vibrant, almost everyday.

Martigny, the Foundation and the Idea of Sharing

In Martigny, the Fondation Gianadda has become much more than a museum. It is a place where people come as much to see as to meet, where artworks engage with the public without excessive distance. To this is added a more discreet but equally important commitment: a social foundation dedicated to helping people in difficulty.

An Epicurean Who Prefers the Table to Speeches

At 88 years old, Léonard Gianadda continues to cultivate a form of simple elegance: that of shared pleasure. Wine is part of this balance, but never alone. He always associates it with a moment, a season, a table.

A glass of well-chilled Petite Arvine as an aperitif, a plate of asparagus in spring with a Fendant, and above all this constant idea that wine only makes sense if it accompanies something genuine.

From Château d'Yquem to Valais Wines

He remembers the great discoveries of his youth, the Sauternes such as Château d'Yquem, the great Bordeaux and Burgundies that made an entire generation dream. At the time, Swiss wines still seemed discreet on the landscape.

Today, perspectives have changed. He observes with interest the evolution of Valais wines, now capable of standing up to the great European references, without ever seeking to imitate them.

Wine as a Pretext for Connection

No quest for rarity at all costs, nor a static collection. What matters is the moment and the people around the bottle. A fine discovery shared is worth more than a great name in isolation.

It is in this spirit that he readily recounts his moments around wine: simple, spontaneous, often unexpected, but always connected to encounter.

A Memory with the Rouvinez Family

Among these moments, he keeps in memory a particular evening at Didier de Courten's for the 75th anniversary of the Rouvinez house. A celebration where one speaks as much of wine as of transmission, of work well done and of fidelity to a certain idea of excellence.

And sometimes, in the course of a conversation, a light remark is enough to sum up the essential: connections are not always visible at first glance, but they are built over time, like the finest wines.
