Pascal Couchepin is originally from Martigny. After a long political career in this same city, he was elected to the National Council in 1979. Elected Federal Councillor in 1998, he served as President of the Confederation in 2003 and 2008. As former chairman of the Board of Directors of Caves Orsat and united by ties of friendship with the Rouvinez family, he agreed to be interviewed.
1. Mr. Couchepin, do you enjoy drinking wine?
Of course. Drinking a glass of wine is the finishing touch to a happy moment.
2. At what time of day do you drink wine?
Whenever a good occasion arises. Wine is the brick that builds a happy day. Wine elevates emotions.
3. Do you prefer white wine or red wine?
Mostly red. I no longer tolerate white wine very well.
4. Which do you prefer?
Pinot Noir, very classic, remains my preferred grape variety. It is the wine for ordinary times, the everyday wine, the one I drink daily with meals. For special occasions, I enjoy the Cœur de Domaines Rouge, which I also gladly present to my German-speaking Swiss friends. It is the best of Valais viticulture.
5. Would you be capable of an extravagance with wine?
No. Wine is a pleasure of life. Wine does not impose its presence. It is enjoyed with joy and fullness.
Through his answers, Pascal Couchepin offers a vision of wine that is both simple and profound. Far from excesses or fleeting trends, he considers it an everyday element, a discreet companion that enriches life's moments without ever imposing itself. A sincere approach, rooted in the Valais terroir, where the pleasure of wine naturally blends with that of sharing.
