Wine Prejudices: The Wine of Women in Childbirth

Among the legends of the Valais vineyard, that of Humagne Blanche occupies a special place. For centuries, this grape variety was renowned for its fortifying virtues, notably due to a supposed iron content far superior to that of other wines. This belief was firmly rooted in local traditions.

A wine associated with birth rituals

As early as the 16th century, Humagne Blanche went beyond the simple framework of tasting. It was part of well-established cultural and family practices. At the time, it was common for a husband to offer his young wife a baro of wine—a wooden container holding about 38 liters—after childbirth.

The wine, often heated and enriched with spices and aromatic herbs, was then consumed daily. The young mother could drink up to a liter a day for several weeks, with the idea of regaining her strength more quickly. This custom, documented as early as 1528, contributed significantly to forging the "medicinal" reputation of Humagne Blanche.

A long-uncontested belief

Over time, this image of an iron-rich wine spread far beyond Valais, reinforcing its status as a beneficial wine. For nearly five centuries, this idea passed through generations without being seriously questioned.

When science decides

It was not until 2004 that this belief was confronted with rigorous scientific analysis. The Changins oenological laboratory then conducted a study on Humagne Blanche. The verdict: no iron content higher than that of other wines was found.

Between tradition and reality

While science has put an end to the myth, it takes nothing away from the cultural and historical interest of this tradition. Humagne Blanche remains today an emblematic grape variety of Valais, appreciated for its unique character and its roots in local history.

Beyond beliefs, it continues above all to bear witness to a strong link between wine, terroir, and traditions, where collective memory sometimes carries as much weight as facts.
