Restoration of Dry Stone Walls

Currently, most of our wines are still resting in the cellar before bottling. In the vineyard, pruning is finished and bud thinning has not yet begun. This gives the workers the opportunity to focus on restoring the dry stone walls.

This work occupies them for six to nine weeks per year, between November and March. For construction, the use of mortar or concrete is prohibited. Only the surface of the access ramps is covered with a layer of mortar to make them drivable.

A well-built wall does not require concrete. Some of our workers have a knack for stonework. Thanks to their motivation, the work costs between 300 and 500 francs per square meter! A significant investment since we receive no financial aid from the canton.

But it is also a contribution to the environment and, above all, to the Valais heritage. In Valais central, hundreds of kilometers of walls support 1500 hectares of vineyards. These walls are home to a very particular fauna and flora which also contribute to the ecological balance of the vineyard.
