Beer: Good for Your Health

27/03/2018

It is well known that red wine is good for your health thanks to resveratrol, a polyphenol found in large quantities in grape skins. It is a powerful antioxidant believed to protect us from cardiovascular disease. As with everything in life, it should not be overused, and one should always keep in mind the famous "chi va piano va sano e va lontano", dear to our Italian friends, which could be translated as "slow and steady wins the race". That said, let us see what applies to beer.

Its properties are said to protect us from an impressive number of illnesses; beer is said to be good against bad cholesterol, effective against kidney stones, promotes digestion, keeps bones healthy, improves memory, relieves everyday stress, induces better sleep and makes the skin more beautiful. Impressive—and guilt-free at aperitif time. Provided one sticks to the standards recommended by the medical profession, of course.

The main ingredient responsible for this health elixir is barley, a cereal found in large quantities in beer. Barley is high in fibre and low in fat; it contains important minerals, vitamins and antioxidants. Then there are hops, this climbing herbaceous plant, which also has sedative and digestive properties. It is a powerful preservative agent that protects beer from wild bacteria and, as a result, also has a positive effect on our health.

Beer is generally accused of encouraging the appearance of a beer belly. A bad reputation it does not deserve. It is no more or less fattening than any other food or drink. Once again, it is a matter of quantity and body build.

And let us never forget the convivial aspect of beer. There is nothing like sharing one with friends around a table while putting the world to rights. Nothing better than the first sip of beer after particularly strenuous physical effort. Nothing more soothing than the uplifting effect of this drink, whose purifying virtues the Egyptian pharaohs already appreciated. Because, as the saying goes, "when morale is good... health is good"!
