Yet nothing could be further from the truth. It was imported from France, specifically from the Bordeaux region, on an experimental basis at the beginning of the 20th century. Like most European vineyards, Ticino was not spared by the phylloxera crisis, the aphid that destroyed a large part of the Old World's vineyards.   <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Little is known about its origin. It may have come from the Libournais vineyards (Bordeaux region) where it was first mentioned as \"merlau.\" In Occitan, Merlot means \"little blackbird\"; the name is said to come from the blackbirds that particularly enjoy the berries of its clusters.  <\/p>\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Merlot is planted worldwide. In North and South America, South Africa, Australia, and of course in Europe, where it holds a prominent place in Ticino with 1,122 hectares.
