The decanter was reserved for great, powerful red wines, while whites were simply to be served chilled and enjoyed quickly. Yet some white wines benefit greatly from being aerated before serving.

Let us take Nez Noir Blanc. Young, lively and focused on fruit and freshness, it can sometimes seem slightly reserved just after bottling. In that case, time in a decanter does it a world of good. One should not hesitate to decant it vigorously, or even to pour it back and forth several times from one vessel to another to give it maximum oxygen. This type of young wine, perfectly mastered from an oenological standpoint, tolerates this oxygenation very well, allowing it to reveal its aromas more quickly.

The same applies to more complex whites such as Trémaille. Aged for one year in oak barrels, this wine has more structure and depth. When it is still young, between two and three years, time in a decanter helps to soften its texture and open up its aromatic bouquet.

With older bottles, however, caution is required. Beyond six years of ageing, it is preferable to decant the wine very gently so as not to disrupt its development. Before any operation, the wine should be tasted. If the first notes of oxidation are already present, it is best to avoid decanting, as it could accelerate its aromatic decline.

As is often the case with wine, there is no universal rule. Everything depends on the wine’s style, its age and its personality. The key is to trust your senses: observe, smell, taste… and sometimes dare to move beyond preconceived ideas.

Because yes, contrary to common misconceptions, some white wines fully deserve time in a decanter.

For a long time, decanting a white wine seemed almost sacrilegious.
