Between childhood memories, a passion for Valais wines and convivial moments over a glass, he takes part in this interview with authenticity and simplicity.

1. What is your favourite wine?

It is difficult to choose a single wine, as there are so many different and enjoyable ones depending on the moment and the dishes served. If I had to pick just one, I would say Fendant, an emblematic Valais wine that can be enjoyed at any time thanks to its light, aromatic character. It often accompanies the start of a good time with friends, or with family at aperitif. This wine is a must in Valais.

2. With whom do you enjoy drinking wine?

Rather than saying that I like to drink wine, I prefer the term “taste”, which refers to those moments of pleasure that I enjoy sharing with friends or family. Major decisions, wonderful friendships and even the resolution of a few disagreements can arise over a glass of wine. I particularly appreciate this convivial, warm side of wine tasting.

3. What is your first memory related to wine?

It goes back to my earliest childhood. To be completely honest, I would say it was my first “drunkenness”, at the age of three and a half, with my brother, in the neighbour’s cellar. We drank straight from the barrel the wine he produced. The effects were quickly felt, and our parents did not fail to notice our visit to that cellar. After that, we never again paid the neighbour any illicit visits.

4. For which wine would you be willing to do something crazy?

Without hesitation, for a Valais wine. There are so many to discover and to taste. Our vineyard is home to viticultural treasures crafted by passionate people. I drink 99% Swiss wines, 90% of which are Valais wines. Each time, I am amazed by the quality and character of the wines that I have the good fortune to discover and taste.

5. If you were not Christophe Darbellay, who would you have liked to be?

René Prêtre, the renowned paediatric cardiac surgeon. I deeply admire his work, everything he has brought to children in Switzerland and abroad for nearly thirty years, as well as the man behind the surgeon: authentic, passionate and profoundly humane.

A key figure in the Valais political landscape, Christophe Darbellay maintains a deep connection with the terroir and the wines of his region.
